He graduated from the Department of Architecture at the State Academy of Fine Arts with the title of senior architect. In 1980, he started his career at TE İnşaat. He gained experience primarily in residential project design and implementation. In 1990, he co-founded KG Architecture, where he carried out domestic and international projects. Outside of Turkey, he has completed projects in various cities including Moscow, Düsseldorf, Chicago, Medina, Ashgabat, Chimgan, Samarkand, Astana, Bucharest, Bacau, Timișoara, and Constanta.
His works have been exhibited and awarded in architectural project competitions he participated in. Erkmen continues to contribute to the profession as an invited jury member, workshop leader, panelist, and speaker or moderator at universities and conferences. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Istanbul Planning Agency, and also holds the position of President of the Istanbul Chamber of Independent Architects as well as the Federation of Independent Architects Associations. Additionally, he is the Chairman of the Board of Aura-Istanbul, which he co-founded.
